Retained by the Sydney Opera House

 

Dennis Wolanski Archives of the Sydney Opera House
A small collection of material about the Sydney Opera House, acquired from donors or purchased by the library, was retained as the Dennis Wolanski Archives of the Sydney Opera House in the Corporate Affairs Department. Access to this collection is available to bona fide researchers during business hours on (02) 9250 7111 or caffairs@soh.nsw.gov.au.

Official Sydney Opera House records
The Corporate Affairs Department at the Sydney Opera House also handles requests under the State Records Act and Freedom of Information Act. The official Sydney Opera House program collection (arranged chronologically 1973-1997), poster collection (1973-1997) and colour photographic collection (1978-1994) were transferred to the State Records Office, together with a comprehensive index of performances and events 1973-1978. Access to these items is available through the State Records Office.

Summary of major transfers

State Library of New South Wales
Archival and manuscript material, photographs, posters, works of art, architectural plans and periodicals on Australian theatre and drama. Includes major archival collections of Nimrod Theatre, New Theatre, the Independent Theatre and other local companies

  • Press clippings & ephemera
    An estimated 3 million items, including extensive material on performers and performances at the Sydney Opera House 1972-1997, as well as on the performing arts in Australia in the 20th century.
  • Programs
    A collection of  80,000 items, including duplicate Sydney Opera House programs (arranged under company and performer names (complementing the official chronological file at the Sydney Opera House and State Records Office), as well as holdings on the performing arts in Australia, mainly in the 20th century.
  • Indexes
    A general card index of 80,000 entries including cross-references to all plays, operas and dance productions performed at the Sydney Opera House and other venues in Australia, 1973-1996, select entries for productions from previous eras and overseas productions, and  comprehensive entries for the British theatre review periodical Play Bulletin and the Australian periodical Theatre Australia. An index of Australian plays comprising 5400 cards on Australian drama with information on performances, availability of published editions, and location of manuscript playscripts.
